RICHARD COOPER WOODYARD (DICK), age 53, passed peacefully at his home on January 19, 2010. He was surrounded by the ones that loved him the most:wife Gaye, son Peyton and his wife Ashley, son Cooper, brother Michael and close family friends. Richard's cancer was discovered in April of 2008 and he fought it courageously every day for the last 21 months. Richard was born in Covington, Kentucky on June 6, 1956. He spent his early years in and around Edgewood, Kentucky attending Dixie Heights High School. He went on to Mississippi Delta Junior College and then graduated from Hanover College. At all three schools he played football, a sport for which he had so much passion. After Hanover, he went on to earn a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. In 1982, Richard relocated to Houston to begin a 26 year career in medical device sales. Throughout his distinguished career, he touched so many lives with his dedicated work ethic and sincere caring attitude which has made him be respected by coworkers and even competitors in a way that cannot be matched. In 1984, he moved to the Woodlands, a place that was his adopted home for almost 25 years. In 1985, he married his sweetheart, Gaye Strunck. Richard's love of football was shared by his wife and sons and this was one of the many reasons that his family was so close. Over the years, Richard coached many baseball, basketball and football teams that both Peyton and Cooper were a part of. He forged many strong friendships through his coaching as his colleagues saw that Richard tried to instill values such as pride, integrity and teamwork in the kids that he was coaching.Although he had a great love for football, the game ran a distant third, well behind his love for his family and for Jesus Christ. He was a long time member of The Fellowship of The Woodlands. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Willard Cooper and father, Peyton Foster Woodyard. Visitation will be in the chapel at The Fellowship of The Woodlands on Sunday, January 24 between 4-7 pm. The funeral service will be in the main sanctuary at FOTW on Monday, January 25 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the South County Football League (SCFL) P.O. Box 7882, The Woodlands, TX 77387 for The Richard Woodyard Scholarship Fund.
